The loveliest journals, handcrafted with love in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. Available in a simple style, or with a buttoned closure. The journal cover, along with every page within, are handmade from the indigenous Lokta tree.
Lokta is found at an altitude of 2000 to 3500 meters in the Himalayan Mountains. These trees regenerate after only 6 to 8 years, making them highly regenerative, and preserving the fragile forest ecology of Nepal.
Lokta paper is renowned for its exceptional durability and special texture. The oldest available manuscripts of Hindu and Buddhist texts, royal edicts, and legal documents are all recorded on Lokta paper. The paper making process involves chopping and beating the bark with a wooden hammer, and washing it 2 times. The softened pulp is then poured over a wooden frame and spread evenly by gently shaking the frame in water. It is then dried in the sun.
